Monument record IKL 366 - Possible Second World War training features.

Please read our .

Summary

Two probable Second World War embanked pits and an area of possible smaller pits, are seen as earthworks (which have subsequently been levelled) on aerial photographs. The features consist of two roughly rectangular pits surrounded by banks, with further possible smaller pits or disturbed ground, and vehicle tracks recorded in close proximity to the south. The roughly rectangular pits can be seen as earthworks in the 1940s and 1950s and are presumed to have been levelled by the 1970s. These features may relate to Second World War military training or weapons pits and are in close proximity to Second World War- Cold War explosive craters (SHER IKL 365) to the north.

Full Description

August 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
Two probable Second World War embanked pits and an area of possible smaller pits, are seen as earthworks (which have subsequently been levelled) on aerial photographs (S1-S3). The features consist of two roughly rectangular pits surrounded by banks, with further possible smaller pits or disturbed ground, and vehicle tracks recorded in close proximity to the south (centred at TL 7894 7405). The roughly rectangular pits can be seen as earthworks in the 1940s and are presumed to have been levelled by the 1970s (S3). These features may relate to Second World War military training or weapons pits and are in close proximity to Second World War- Cold War explosive craters (IKL 365) to the north. Further embanked rectangular pits can be seen on S1 outside of the project area to the south west (centred at TL 7840 7380). The possible smaller pits have been mapped by extent as the features are too small to map due to the scale of the aerial photographs
