Summary

Brandeston Hall is a manorial hall visible on the 1st Ed OS map and the Brandeston Tithe map. The hall is listed and dates from c.1550. The farmstead is laid out in a regular U-plan and a regular H-plan. The hall is detached. The farnstead is set alongside a public road next to All Saints Church on the edge of a village. The U-plan has been reduced to an L-plan while the H-plan has been completely replaced by more modern buildings. This represents a significant loss (50%).

Full Description

Brandeston Hall is a manorial hall visible on the 1st Ed OS map and the Brandeston Tithe map. The hall is listed and dates from c.1550. The farmstead is laid out in a regular U-plan and a regular H-plan. The hall is detached. The farnstead is set alongside a public road next to All Saints Church on the edge of a village. The U-plan has been reduced to an L-plan while the H-plan has been completely replaced by more modern buildings. This represents a significant loss (50%).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
