Monument record HXN 010 - Park Farm; Hoxne Old Park

Moat. Fragments, small rectangular, isolated, unoccupied. Farm buildings nearby. The house is probably a fragment of a larger building, late C15 with a raised-aisle roof, extended to the north in the later C16 (S1). Seems to have been a lodge in the Old Park (S4), one of two parks in Hoxne belonging to the Bishops of Norwich (see HXN 022 for the New Park). In 1275 the Bishop and his monks were prosecuted for straying into Denham while `sporting' (S2). Beasts were taken from the Park at Hoxne to stock the King's park at Eye 1329-30, and in 1383-4 Thomas Eccleshale was granted custody of the park at Hoxne (S3). In 1420 John Talbot was granted the place of the park keeper at Hoxne, with the care of the mansion or lodge (S2).
