Full Description

Mockbeggars Hall (Old Hall), Claydon. 19th century farmstead and 17th century farmhouse with converted buildings. Regular courtyard T-shaped plan formed by working agricultural buildings. The farmhouse is set away from the yard. Partial loss (less than 50%) of the traditional farm buildings and farmhouse. Located within an isolated position (S1-6).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.

Mockbeggars Hall has the date 1621 across its gables and was apparently built by the Aylmers, lords of the manor of Claydon; but whether it served in turn with Claydon Hall (qv TM 14 NW 2) as the manor house or was connected with another manor in Claydon, perhaps Byrches, is not clear. It has been called variously Claydon Hall (a) Old Hall (b), Mock Hall (c) and also Bakens Hall. (2-5)
