Full Description
2020: Land adjacent to Woodford Gardens (TL/8565; BSE 689). An archaeological evaluation revealed a ditch, which contained sherds of a Belgic grog-tempered bowl that probably dates from the first half of the 1st century AD. Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2020 (S1).
Trial trenching revealed a ditch which contained Late Iron Age - Early Roman pottery (73; 741g) derived from a single vessel. The latter is a Belgic grog-tempered bowl that probably dates from the first half of the 1st century AD, possibly spanning the Roman Conquest. The trenching also revealed modern made ground layers, a modern fence line, a modern pit, and two undated pits. In addition, the western end of Trench 1 was occupied by the eastern edge of a large pit. Modern material was evident within the pit and following consultation with the Planning Archaeologist, it was not excavated. Its location corresponds with the eastern edge of a large probable quarry pit indicated on the 1926 OS map (S2).
