Full Description
2020: An archaeological evaluation by means of trenching identified a large east-west aligned ditch visible in two trenches in the northern area of the site. The ditch corresponds with a feature shown on the 1st edition OS map of 1880 and it is suggested that this feature demarks the southern edge of an ancillary enclosure related to the medieval moat (YAX 001) recorded on historic maps adjacent to the north of the site that remained in use until at least the early to mid 20th century. The remaining feature revealed by the evaluation was a large north-south aligned ditch or water feature in the southeast corner of the site which also corresponds to a feature on the 1st edition OS map of 1880. Small fragments of post-medieval peg tile and brick were found in both features and scattered across the site. (S1)
