Farmstead record SHY 014 - Farmstead: Shelley Hall

Shelley Hall, Shelley. 16th century farmstead and farmhouse. Loose courtyard three-sided plan formed by working agricultural buildings. The farmhouse is set away from the yard. Partial loss (less than 50%) of the traditional farm buildings. Located within an isolated position (S1-6).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.

2025: Recording of a brick built agricultural outbuilding of Shelley Hall, which cartographic evidence indicates was constructed prior to 1838. The earliest elements of Shelley Hall were constructed in the early 16th century, with many additions in the 17th and 19th centuries. The main construction of the cowshed is of red brick laid in English-bond with multiple instances of repair across all elevations. The building was likely originally a stable block and presently has a dual function as a domestic space separate from a set of stable stores.
