Full Description
Bronze seal of Bishop Aethelwald of Dommoc, c. AD 850.
Dug up by a labourer in a garden about 200 yards from the site of the monastery at Eye. It was subsequently acquired by a Mr Fenner of Eye who allowed it to be exhibited at the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1822. Seal is bronze, mitre shaped, of two rows of arches surmounted by a rude fleur de lis and supported by nine wolves heads in the interstices of the arches, the eyes were originally inlaid with small garnets, of which only one survives. Legend on the die is `SIG ETHILWALDI EP' (S1).
