Monument record BRF 024 - Church of St Mary

St Mary's Church. Scarfe records this as a possible Domesday Minster (S1). There are two Domesday churches recorded in the parish of Bramford; the second church is thought to be located in the parish of Sproughton.

1992: Watching brief on the layin of a new gas pipe from Church Green to the western side of the south porch of the church revealed an old culvert. No burials were disturbed and the only finds were a sherd of medieval courseware and peg tile fragments (S3).

2007: Tree-ring analysis, Assessment of the timbers of the spire revealed that none of them contained sufficient rings to make them suitable candidates for dendrochronological dating. Of the timbers sampled in the structures at the top of the tower, two pairs of timbers matched each other, and were combined into new average series. Neither series was dated. One of the two large north-south beams retained complete sapwood, and was found to have been felled in winter AD 1810/11. This date is over a decade later than inscriptions on some of the other timbers, and hence appears to represent another phase of repair or rebuilding at the site (S2).
