Summary

1322 wreck of English cargo vessel which was wrecked near Kirkley while bound to Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Berwick-upon-Tweed with wheat and wine "for the King's forces". It appears likely that this was intended for Edward II's campaign against the Scots in August 1322. Constructed of wood, she was a sailing vessel. Full Description

The ship of Henry Heth, LA SEINTE MARIESHIPP of Heth, was wrecked near "Kyrkeley" whilst carrying a cargo of wheat and wine to be delivered to the King's forces in Newcastle and Berwick. She carried 195 quarters of wheat and 12 pipes of wine: only 10 and a half quarters of wheat and the 12 pipes of wine were saved. Many other ships carrying such goods for the King were forced by the storm to jettison much of their cargoes. Given at Bishopthorpe, 5 July 1323. (1)

NB: "Heth" is unidentified, presumably modern "Heath". Since the cargo was intended for "the King's forces" it would seem likely that this refers to Edward II's Scottish campaign of August 1322. (2) This is consistent with the fact that most entries in the Calendars of Close Rolls and Patent Rolls occur weeks, months, or years after the incidents to which they refer.

The name of the vessel has been indexed in the alternative version LA SEINTE MARIE, to assist retrievability.
