Full Description

1814 wreck of English cargo vessel which was beached on Orford Beach after grounding on the Shipwash on her passage from Sunderland. Laden with coal, she was a wooden sailing vessel.
Status: Casualty

`The ESCULAPIUS, Gowdy, of Sunderland, coal laden, struck upon the Shipwash Sand on Wednesday night, but after getting off, the master was obliged to run her on shore on Orford Beach, to prevent her sinking in deep water. The materials will be saved, but the vessel will become a wreck.' (1)(3)

NB: Source (2) states the vessel's departure as Sunderland, not made explicit in sources (1) and (3).

The conventional spelling of the vessel's name is AESCULAPIUS which has therefore been given as an alternative version of the name.

Master: Gowdy (1)(2)(3)

Date of Loss Qualifier: A
