Full Description
1798 wreck of English cargo vessel which stranded near Orfordness, laden with a cargo of coal; a wooden sailing vessel.
Status: Casualty
`Newcastle, Nov. 17...The JOSEPH AND ANN, coal loaden, is lost off Orfordness.' (1)
`Newcastle, Saturday, November 17...In the late gale, the PHILIP AND ANN was lost...the JOSEPH AND MARY was also lost, the crew saved.' (2)
NB: The JOSEPH AND MARY appears to be the same vessel as the JOSEPH AND ANN; both lost on the coast of Suffolk, and reported in the same issue and in the same context as the PHILIP AND ANN in source (1) as well as in source (2).
`To be sold by auction (for the benefit of the underwriters) on Monday first, March 4, 1799, at the low part of South Shields, near the Coble Landing: All the materials of the late ship JOSEPH AND ANN, burthen 22 keels; consisting of anchors, cables, sails, standing and running rigging, guns, and sundry other articles. The sale to begin at 10 o'clock in the forenoon.' (3)
