Full Description
ENGLISH CARGO VESSEL, 1814
Status: Casualty
`The TWO BROTHERS...and the MARIA, Richmond, of Colchester, from Yarmouth to London, were driven on Aldbro' Beach at the same time [as the DIE HOFFNUNG].' (1)
Other vessels were driven on shore at Southwold the same day `during a strong gale at SSE'. (1)
`During the gale on Tuesday morning last, a most distressing scene presented itself on the beach at Aldeburgh. At 6 o'clock the sloop TWO BROTHERS...was driven on shore...Soon afterwards, another small vessel was observed, with her hull under water, within a cable's length of the shore, totally unmanageable. For the preservation of their lives, the crew had got upon the shrouds and rigging. In this perilous situation, they were driven by the violence of the wind and sea, from opposite the south end to the north end of the town, where the vessel ran on shore. The crew were all saved. The ship proved to be the MARIA, of Colchester, laden with flour and barley. The cargo is nearly all saved, but it is supposed the vessel will become a wreck.' (3)
