Full Description

1813 wreck of British transport vessel which stranded on Aldeburgh Sand on her passage from the Baltic. Constructed of wood, she was a sailing vessel.
Status: Casualty

'The HARRIET (transport) Clephane, from the Baltic, run on shore on Aldbro' Sand on Wednesday evening, and it is feared will be lost.' (1)

NB: This vessel is indexed in source (2) under the date of 1913 in error. Indexed in that source as a troop ship; at this period a transport could be either a troop ship or a vessel carrying a cargo of government stores, or perform both functions simultaneously. The latter would be consistent with a voyage from the Baltic at this period, typically naval stores (timber and hemp), which, however, was difficult during the Napoleonic Wars. She may have been returning from the supply of troops and/or arms and armament during British involvement in the Baltic, for which see (4). (3)

Master: Clephane (1)(2)

Date of Loss Qualifier: Actual date of loss
