Full Description
1299 wreck of English cargo vessel, one of an unknown number of vessels which foundered after being broken up and scuttled by local men, upon her arrival at Southwold. Constructed of wood, she was a sailing vessel. [See also TM 57 SW 68.]
Status: Casualty
The first of an unknown number of vessels, but certainly at least two, lost in this incident or repeated harrassment of the earl's ships:
'1299. Oct. 23. Wesminster. The like to William Haward and John Bakun, touching the persons who carried away the goods of Ralph de Monte Hermeri, earl of Gloucester and Hertford, found in his ship in his port of Suthwaude, co. Suffolk, whilst the earl was in Scotland on the king's service and under his protection, and cut into fragments some ships of the earl's men which had put into that port, and sunk them, and from day to day prevented, and still prevent, his merchants in charge of ships from putting into that port, as they were accustomed to do.' '1300. April 1. Westminster. Association of William de Carleton, in the room of John Bakun, with William Haward, in a commission of oyer and terminer, directed to the latter, touching the persons who carried away the goods of Ralph de Monte Hermeri, earl of Gloucester and Hertford, out of a ship of his which put in at Suthwald, co. Suffolk, while the earl was on the king's service and under his protection in Scotland, broke up and sank ships of his men in that port, and prevent merchants from putting in at that port as they have used to do.' '1301. Nov. 21. Linlithgow. Association of Henry Spigurnel with William Haward and John Bacun in a commission of oyer and terminer directed to the latter, touching the persons who carried away the goods of Ralph de Monte Hermer, earl of Gloucestesr and Hertford, out of his ship in the port of Suthwaude, co. Suffolk, while he was on the king's service and under his protection in Scotland, and cut into small pieces and sunk some of his ships that put in there, and prevented his mariners from putting in there.'
