Full Description

ENGLISH BARGE, 1832
Status: Casualty

`When crossing the Barnard Sand, a heavy sea shifted her deck cargo
to leeward and almost caused her to fill. The master decided to make
for the recently opened harbour at Lowestoft, but while still a good
half mile away another heavy sea carried away her tiller, causing her
to broach-to and upset. The wreck drifted north and grounded near
Lowestoft Ness with the master and crew still hanging on. Although
the lifeboat had been launched and the Manby's Apparatus ready, the
crew were taken off by the beach men. Unfortunately one of the
seamen, Joseph Little, died before help could reach him.' (2)
