Full Description

1807 wreck of English cargo vessel which stranded near Corton en route from Sunderland to Rochester with coal; a wooden sailing vessel.
Status: Casualty

`On the 25th inst. in a heavy gale from the S and SE, the following vessels were driven on shore on the Norfolk coast...The HOPEWELL, Kidd, of and from Sunderland to Rochester; crew saved, but the ship is likely to become a wreck. The crew were all night in the rigging, and were taken off next morning by the lifeboat.' (1)

`Yarmouth, Oct. 23. Last night we had a heavy gale at SE. The ORPHAN, of Whitstable, for Rochester, from Shields, with coals, came on shore near Corton; also the HOPEWELL, of and from Sunderland, with coals. The ship is wrecked, but the crew saved.' (2)(3)

NB: It is unclear from the phraseology of sources (2) and (3) which ship was intended; in the light of source (1), it may be the HOPEWELL. Alternatively, both vessels may have been wrecked.
