Full Description

ENGLISH BRIG, 1855
Status: Casualty

`The Lowestoft harbour company's tug PURSUIT towed out the VICTORIA
lifeboat, each man in the crew being provided with a lifebelt for the
first time. Whilst lying near the casualty, the tide fell and she was
left high and dry on the sand for something like five hours. A report
of the time says that men were observed walking to and from the
wreck, a very unusual sight. (In the reminiscences of the Robert
Hook, the cox'n, published in a Lowestoft paper in 1892, he says that
the lifeboat was aground from 7am. until 3pm. and was swamped by
waves.) The lifeboat refloated on the tide and brought the crew of
nine safely ashore. The Pakefield lifeboat had also launched and
stood by both vessels, but fortunately was not needed.' (2)

`Yarmouth 9th Nov: Seventy-two pieces of oak, with three anchors and a chain found on the Ham Sand, were landed here on the 5th, supposed to have belonged to the LOUISA, Mockford, from Sunderland to Newhaven, which was wrecked on that Sand on the 3rd.' (3)

Master: Mockford
