Full Description

1803 wreck of English cargo vessel which stranded on the Newcome Sand while en route from South Shields to London with coal; a wooden sailing vessel.
Status: Casualty

`The MARY & MARGARET, Coulson, from Shields to London, is lost on the Newcome Sand, near Yarmouth.' (2)

`During a heavy gale in October 1803 the ship MARY AND MARGARET, of South Shields, was wrecked near Lowestoft. The crew were rescued.' (3)

`Newcastle, October 15...The MARY AND MARGARET, from South Shields, Thomas Coulson, master, bound to London, is lost on the New Comb Sand, near Yarmouth; crew saved.' (4)

`Newcastle, Saturday, October 22, 1803...On the 9th inst. in a heavy gale of wind, the ship MARY AND MARGARET, of South Shields, Thomas Coulson, master, was wrecked near Lowestoff. The life-boat attempted to save the crew, but being unskilfully managed, they could not reach the ship; on which Lieut. Bennet, of the Sea Fencibles, jumped into a shore-boat, followed by some intrepid fellows, and putting off, reached the ship, and brought the whole of the crew (then nearly perishing) safe to land. Lieut. Bennet and some ladies and gentlemen immediately set on foot a subscription for the relief of the sufferers.' (5)

`The MARY AND MARGARET, Nelson, of and from South Shields, bound to London, got on the Newcombe Sand, on the 8th, in sight, and sunk; crew saved.' (6)
