Full Description
2005: A short season of targeted geophysical and topographical survey was carried out in fields on the southeast edge of Freckenham. The site was targeted after numerous metal finds were reported to the PAS team by metal detectorists. The site consisted of arable farmland and small areas of pasture in the vicinity of a medieval motte and the late medieval/early modern manor house. A number of geophysical anomalies were revealed. Possible bronze age round barrows were identified at the edge of the high ground. The clearest evidence for structures come from the northern area where the group of associated linear anomalies including show a 90 degree alignment suggestive of a group of structures. A long linear feature running north-south across the northeast area of the site was visible in the geophysical and topographical survey results. This is probably indicative of a medieval earthwork, possible defensive and assicated with the Motte at the centre of the village. Rectilinear enclosures were found close to River Kennet at the south end of the site. (S1)
Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2005 (S2).
