Full Description

Evaluation identified Middle Iron Age activity on the higher ground in the W part of the site. The remains consist of ditches and pits together containing a moderate-sized assemblage of predominantly Middle Iron Age pottery. Other features revealed in the trenches consisted of a row of post-holes, possibly of Roman date, and field boundary ditches, most of which are depicted on late 19th- and 20th-century maps. Modern features alongside the route of the former light railway were also investigated (S1).

The principal result of the fieldwork was the identification of Middle Iron Age activity on the higher ground in the western part of the site. The remains consist of ditches and pits, from which was recovered a moderately sizeable assemblage of predominately Middle Iron Age pottery, suggesting possible occupation in the vicinity of these trenches. To the north of this area of Middle Iron Age activity, a cluster of postholes was encountered, possibly forming part of a fence or other timber structure. The only dating evidence from these features was three small fragments of Roman brick, so the postholes may date to this period, although given the absence of any other Roman material or features on the site, this material could be residual. The remaining archaeology on site consisted of field boundary ditches, most of which are depicted on late 19th-century and 20th-century maps of the site, modern features alongside the route of the former light railway, and a small number of undated pits and ditches in the northern part of the site. A natural pond or palaeochannel was revealed in the central northern part of the site, aligned from north to south. It was filled with a sequence of deposits, including decayed plant matter, and in places was over 3m deep. It contained no artefactual material, suggesting that it may have silted up prior to intensive human occupation of the area (S2).
