Full Description

1978: Watching Brief. Construction of a new warehouse in Sept. 1978 on land between Great Whip Street and Gower Street involved cutting into the hillslope by up to 2.4m in the south-west corner. Only at this point, however, did the formation level for the floor cut into the natural sand. The surface was cleaned up but no features other than modern were revealed. Sherds of Ipswich ware were found, however, in the lower topsoil remaining to the north and further pottery (Ipswich ware, Thetford-ware, and early Medieval ware) was found in foundation trenches and service trenches over the rest of the site.(S1)

Of particular note were contractor’s comments relating to very deep (4m+) feature(s) in the central part of the site with preserved/waterlogged wooden remains. Unfortunately this was not observed by members of the SCCAS at the time, (S2).

2008: Desk Based Assessment, (S2).
