Full Description

A documentary survey was undertaken of 29a Churchgate Street as remidiation for groundworks being undertaken without allowing the opportunity for archaeological investigation to take place.

29a Churchgate Street was an outbuilding of the property situated on the street frontage. From 1900 it was probably used as a workshop for the manufacture of umbrellas though the building is shown on the 1884 Ordnance Survey map. Unfortunately there are no deeds at the record office for this property or for the adjoining properties. From the position of buildings shown on Richard Payne's map of 1834 and that of John Lenny in 1823 it appeared to join to properties in the ownership of the Guildball Feoffinent. This is not the case and has been proven through a comparison of the Feoffment plans with Thomas Warren's 1777 map of the town. The later maps of Richard Payne have been shown to be inaccurate. The cellar beneath 29a Chwdigate Street cuts through the archaeology and the ground to the east distwbed during the building work probably bad a considerable amount of overburden. The consistency of the northern property boundary with that of Thomas Warren's map suggests that this boundary may be of an early date. The building fronting Churchgate Street was rebuilt in 1835 and may include the sites of more than one property. In the absence of the deeds is not possible to identify the lateral boundaries between the street and the northern boundary. (S1)
