Monument record PSG 073 - Earthworks and cropmarks of post medieval track or boundary and probable drainage features

Please read our .

Summary

A narrow linear trackway or double-ditched boundary, probably of post medieval date, is visible as an earthwork and cropmark on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data. It is likely to be associated with a path shown here on historical Ordnance Survey maps, and/or with a tree avenue depicted here on Hodskinson’s 1783 Map of Suffolk (see PSG 007). Other features visible to each side of the boundary or trackway are likely to be drainage features. Visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2022 shows that the earthworks have mostly been levelled.

Full Description

October 2026. South-West Suffolk Claylands Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project.
A narrow linear trackway or double-ditched boundary, probably of post medieval date, is visible as an earthwork and cropmark on aerial photographs (S1-S3) and visualised lidar data (S4). It is likely to be associated with a path shown here on historical Ordnance Survey maps (such as S5), and/or with a tree avenue depicted here on Hodskinson’s 1783 Map of Suffolk (S6, recorded previously as PSG 007). The trackway appears to still be in use on the 1940s aerial photographs (S1-S2). Other features visible to each side of the boundary or trackway are likely to be drainage features. Visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2022 (S4) shows that most of the features formerly visible as earthworks have been levelled, but that some still survive, including a linear depression along the line of the trackway or boundary.
