Taken from NRHE record:

Remains of a quadrangular moat, consisting of the south and east arms and the south west angle, at Houghton Hall.

Remains of a homestead moat, waterfilled and in good condition.

A large sub-rectangular homestead moat situated in a commanding position along a north east-south west ridge circa 87.0m. OD. It measures overall 150.0m. north east - south west by 80.0m. The south west arm has been filled but its course is indicated by a pond and subsidence in a wall.

The remaining arms average 12.0m. wide, 4.5m. deep and except for the north west, are water-filled.

An overflow exists at the east angle and there is some trace of a retaining bank along the north east arm. Access to the interior is uncertain but there is evidence of a causeway on the north east from which a public footpath leaves in a easterly direction.

The level island is occupied by a 18th century farmhouse with 19th century additions. See photograph; there is no evidence of an earlier occupation.

Published 1:2500 survey revised.
