Full Description

A small area was excavated within a levelled moat as the site was threatened by further levelling with a bulldozer. A black patch visible in the plough- soil proved to be a shallow hollow probably used as a midden - it contained ashy soil rich in charcoal, oyster shells, bones, and a very interesting group of pottery mostly of late C15-early C16 date. Some kiln waste was present and most of the pottery found was ascribable to kilns operating in Weybread around this date, the sites of some having already been found. The typical fabric would appear to be sandy, basically a light orange in colour and with a green glaze. The commonest forms are bunghole pitchers, jugs or flagons, and shallow dishes or bowls. Portions of several chafing dishes and cups were also found. Pottery imported to the site included Faeren and Siegburg stoneware, a sherd of (?) Beauvais ware, a few sherds of Grimston ware. Metalwork included 2 iron rowel spurs and a bronze belt buckle (S1). Fieldwalking M Joyce (S3).
Buildings, ponds etc., of Old Farm are marked on the OS 1:10560 map. For another pottery production site nearby, see WYB 043.
