Full Description
Moat. Square, small, wet, complete. Site of Hessett Hall. 320m from parish boundary, 700m from church.
Home of the Bacon, Walpole and Le Heup families. Hall recorded 1541 to C18, destroyed by fire, late C18? (S1)(R1-R3). Map of 1723 (when owned by Le Heup) shows hall (drawn) and numerous other houses/buildings around area of site (map in Suffolk Record Office, Bury?).
1971: `No trace of Hessett Hall within a square moat, overgrown with trees & scrub, but still water filled. Those outbuildings shown on OS 25 inch map are reduced to piles of rubble, the foot-bridge is destroyed, and the well is choked with rubbish. For field names see tithe map.
