Full Description

Moat. Square, small, NE and NW arms survive wet, SE arm re-cut as a drainage ditch, S angle filled in. Causeway to NW may be original. Unoccupied, 150m from parish boundary, close to church. No trace of buildings within (S1). Adjacent to LGH 004, possible deserted Med village.
2003: Excavations (further to follow) by Mel Birch. Finds of C11(?) & later pottery. Details to follow.
Note fields to N recorded on Tithe Map & Apportionment (R1) retain names relating to Hellimott. In the Field book of Walsham-le-Willows (1577)(R2) a small plot is referred to as `of The Hellimott' and in 1695 as `of The Hellimott at Langham' (S1). Is this 'The Hellimott'?

Work has continued for the second year on a three-year project to excavate two sites near the isolated church at Langham. The foundations of an 18th-century dovecote and the outline of an early building with finds of Saxon pottery and artifacts have been found on the small moated site to the east of the church. On the second site, in an area of rough pasture lying immediately south of the church, evidence has been unearthed of a settlement dating from the 10th to the 14th century, with a later reoccupation of the site by a rectory from the mid-16th to the mid-18th century. Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2005 (S4).
