Full Description

Date unknown: Single handaxe? Others? Pit visible on first edition OS map, (S2)

27 May 1992: Forestry Commission excavated deep pit, circa 10-15 feet wide, to bury tree stumps, on North edge of overgrown pit. Not seen before filled but subsoil spread on adjoining track, examined - no finds but definite boulder clay element mixed with chalk and flints (natural), although mostly sandy and some loam. This contrasts with other pits dug by Forestry Commission which were through solid chalk and tends to support the report of palaeoliths (S1).
