Full Description
`The remains of another tumulus are situated at the southern end of the meadow (the small triangular meadow containing BNH 004); according to information given by an elderly inhabitant of the village this had, some fifty years ago, been very much bigger, but had been largely removed to facilitate the passage of farm carts entering the gate' (S1). 'Excavation ... revealed that quite 4/5th of the original structure had been removed to below the present ground level and the remaining portion which now appears as a bank by the hedge was originally the southern perimeter of the tumulus, since at a depth of 2 feet a turf structure ... was encountered rising in a northerly direction for a few feet and then abruptly destroyed where the present bank inclines down to the cart track; no material of any kind was discovered.' (S1).
March 2018. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
Assessment of the aerial photographs revealed no conclusive evidence of this former barrow. Although it must be noted that agricultural structures and recent activities on the historic aerial photographs will have made identification problematic.
This former barrow represents part of a cluster of up to seven barrows forming a barrow cemetery overlooking the Little Ouse River and a minor tributary (BNH 120). S. Horlock (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 10th March 2018.
