Full Description

Site discovered by owner when digging inspection pit through floor of outbuilding to rear of 49 Chediston Street in October 1975. Site visited by Oak-Rhind & Wade, exposed section recorded and pipe fragments removed for study. Finds include `considerable quantity' of fragmentary pipes, slabs of kiln lining (fired pipe-clay reinforced with a lattice-work of pipe stems), brick fragments with vitrified surfaces & C19 pottery. N facing section recorded - pair of walls with rubbish infill. Interpreted as probable entrance to kiln to S, backfilled with rubbish prior to construction of present outbuilding in C19.
Circa 2,000 clay pipe fragments, falling into six main groups, plus three other pipes. The operating date of the kiln appears to be circa 1855-1860 and to have been a branch of pipemaker William Copeman (of Beccles), possibly run by James Calver. For details and illustrations of pipes see (S1) and manuscript notes in archive file.
