Full Description

1952: Medieval pottery found in basement excavation in August 1952. Sherds collected by workmen and given to H E P Spencer of IPSMG. They included pottery from 12th to 14th Century, and stoneware sherds probably dating from 15th century. Many animal & bird bones found, plus the fact that a lot of the pottery appeared to be jugs of various types, led Spencer to suggest that probably an inn fronting the market had stood here. Old brick well, 4 feet 6 inches diameter, with unusually small bricks lining it - possibly could date from late 14th Century. Exact location vague. Cutting from EDT, 21.8.52 (S1).
