Full Description

September 2013. Lothingland, Lowestoft and North Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
The site of a group of four former World War Two pillboxes, which originally part of wider defensive network, consisting of an extensive line of anti-tank cubes, barbed wire obstructions and associated defences (see LWT 045) is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S4). The site is centred on TM 5331 9592. The wider system forms a perimeter defence or ‘stop line’ around Lowestoft. See LWT 194-8, LWT 200 for other nearby components of this defensive system. Three of the pillboxes are type 22. The fourth, located at TM 5322 9586, appears to be earthen covered with a blast wall covered entrance and is slightly larger and circular in plan. The aerial photographs from 1941 (S1) and 1944 (S2) indicate that further additional and temporary structures were present (for example at TM 5321 9582), however the vast majority of these cannot be discerned confidently on the currently available reproductions of the aerial photographs, and were therefore not mapped.
