Full Description
Various military features of World War II date can be seen in the area of a holiday camp to the north of Kessingland (now built over) on 1941 aerial photographs (S1). There are 2 gun emplacements and possibly one weapons pit, a number of sections of trench and an earthwork, of unknown function. On 1944 (S2) aerial photographs, it can be seen that the whole site has been surrounded with barbed wire, in places a double thickness fence, creating a military strongpoint.
The site of Kessingland coastal battery, an emergency battery built during the Second World War as part of Eastern Command's coastal defences. It was operational by 1941 and mounted two 6-inch ex-naval guns. It was manned by 326 Coast Battery Royal Artillery and also by the Home Guard from 1943 to 1944. The guns were reduced to care and maintenance by September 1944. Aerial photography from 1972 shows that the site is occupied by housing and no features of the battery remain (S3).
Site of Second World War heavy anti aircraft Diver battery in the Diver Strip at Kessingland Beach. It was armed with four 3.7-inch Mark IIc guns equipped with Predictor BTL, and Radar AA No.3 Mark V when it was deployed here on 24th November 1944, and was manned by 608 Battery of 183 (Mixed) Anti Aircraft Artillery Regiment. It formed part of 63 Heavy Anti Aircraft Brigade deployment (S4)
