Full Description

A number of World War II coastal defence features can be seen along the coast north of Felixstowe from TM320357 to TM322361. These included a hexagonal pillbox (TM321359), constructed some time before July 1940, enclosed to the north by a stretch of defensive scaffolding. The pillbox was possibly located strategically as this low point on the cliff provides easy access from the beach. Another structure (TM322360), possibly another pillbox, can be seen in July 1940 and may be covered with earth in later photographs from 1944. Some time after July 1940 another military feature was constructed at TM320358. This feature consists of two narrow trenches at either side of a small, roughly circular mound, which could be some type of buried military structure. All the features mentioned above are linked by stretches of barbed wire obstruction. To the north, a possible storage area defined by barbed wire is visible, centred on TM 32043595. (S1) (S2) (S3)
By October 1945 the hexagaonal pillbox and the barbed wire have been removed, although the earthworks of the possible buried structures remain. (S4)
