Full Description

Sea banks are visible to the north of the River Blyth on 1945 aerial photographs (S1), enclosing Bulcamp marshes. There are about 8km of sea banks, some complete and some fragmentary, in the area between TM45307575-TM47957656. Most of the banks visible in 1945 also appear on the OS 1st Ed 25" map of c1884, and thus seem to have their origins in the post-medieval period. Many of the sea banks mapped from 1945 aerial photographs also appear on an estate map of 1862 (S2). Other sections of banks visible on the 1862 map fill the gaps in the banks seen on aerial photographs, suggesting that originally, there was one continuous sea bank in this area, with extensions which have disappeared by 1945.
Also seen as part of field survey of Suffolk Coast - old bank curves round to NW as double row of posts then joins up with earthern bank visible in section. Breached by Wolsey's Creek - double posts to W of creek. Single line and remains of earth bank to E. Double row c.5m apart - whole thing inaccessible. S3
