|Civil Parish||HEMLEY, SUFFOLK COASTAL, SUFFOLK|
Type and Period (3)
A group of possibly man-made angular and interlocking pits, centred on TM 29314315, can be seen adjoining a channel in the salt-marsh at the edge of the Deben Estuary on photographs taken from the 1940s onwards. There is no clear evidence that the pits are man-made but if they are man-made features they may constitute the remains of a small-scale shellfish production site or of some type of extractive process. (S1) (S2) The features are still visible on photographs taken in 1971 but this area of salt-marsh appears to be subject to a process of managed retreat. (S3)
Other pits in the area may also be man-made features.
