Full Description
A Post Medieval sea bank is visible as an earthwork, on aerial photographs taken in 1945, on the north side of the Deben in Melton and Woodbridge parishes. The bank is roughly 3.58 km in length and runs with a few small interruptions from near Sun Wharf in Woodbridge at TM 27864924 right up under Wilford Bridge to TM 29685111. (S1) The 1st and 2nd edition Ordnance Survey 25" maps of circa 1884 and 1904 depict a bank in the same position running from Woodbridge to Wilford Bridge. The stretch of bank to the north of Wilford Bridge is not depicted on either map. The flood defences are therefore likely to be of Post Medieval date although the stretch from Wilford Bridge northwards may be modern in date. (S2) (S3)
