Full Description

A Post Medieval sea bank is visible as an earthwork on photographs from 1945 running from the northern end of Shingle Street at TM 36994314, up to the entrance to Barthorp's Creek and back around the western side of Oxley Marshes to terminate at the southern end of Shingle Street at TM 36504240. The main stretch of sea bank described above runs for roughly 3.8km. A shorter stretch of bank runs off the main sea bank, roughly eastwards from TM 36394261 for 280m around the western side of the Martello Tower at Shingle Street. (S1) A bank is depicted in the same position as most of the bank described above on the 1st and 2nd edition Ordnance Survey maps of circa 1884 and 1904 suggesting that the main flood defence is of Post Medieval date. (S2) (S3)
See HLY 047 for another short stretch of possible sea bank to the north of this bank.
