Full Description
A probable Post Medieval quarry pit is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs, centred on TM 26314653, just to the west of Lumber Wood in Martlesham parish. The quarry pit is irregular in shape and measures 78m by 71m at its widest points. A small quarry pit is depicted on both the 1st and 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey 25" maps of circa 1884 and 1904 (S1) (S2), but the feature mapped from the aerial photographs covers a much wider area. It is therefore possible that the quarry pit had largely been levelled out by 1884 and is earlier than that date. (S3) (S4)
