Full Description

A World War II military site of unknown function is visible on the hill to the east of Fagbury Cliff in Trimley St Mary and Felixstowe parishes, on aerial photographs taken in 1944. Access to the site is gained by a military, possibly concrete road, which is visible running north-west from TM 27843421 on Ferry Lane to the main part of the site, located at TM 27333474, 750m away. A square pillbox with a roofed entrance and blast wall on its southern side is visible on Ferry Lane at the southern end of the road. The main part of the site consists of two small rectangular buildings, one 7m by 3m and one 4m by 3m, stood on what appear to be rectangular concrete surfaces. The road runs past these building and into a square, possibly fenced enclosure, centred on TM 27222474, that measures about 33m square. Within the enclosure there is an open-roofed structure around 11m square which has an entrance, protected by a blast wall, on its southern side. To the north and south of the larger enclosure, at TM 27343477 and TM 27333467 respectively, there are what appear to be embanked gun emplacements with concrete open-roofed structures visible within earthwork mounds measuring roughly 10m in diameter. The site may be related to the defence of Landguard Fort during the Second World War. (S1) (S2)
See TYY 035 for a possibly related pillbox to the north-west of this site.

The former presence of these features was noted during a 1997 Aerial Photographic Appraisal of the area, but they were not transcribed in detail (S3).
