Monument record FEX 221 - Possible World War I bombing range marker and probable gun emplacements.

A Modern military bombing range marker, possibly of World War I date, and a two possible gun emplacements of Modern military date are visible as a structure and earthworks on aerial photographs taken from 1944 onwards, on Landguard Point, Felixstowe. The bombing range marker, located at TM 28323137, consists of an arrow-shaped feature around 24m in length, pointing eastwards towards the sea. It is probably constructed of some type of hardcore that may have been painted. It clearly must have gone out of use prior to the construction of the World War II anti-invasion defences, sometime in 1939 or 1940, suggesting that it may be related to an earlier period of activity. The two possible gun emplacements, located about 12m apart at TM 28353143 and TM 28333145, consist of circular banks enclosing areas of roughly 12m in diameter, with entrances on their northern sides. These features could also be interpreted as the remains of a searchlight battery. Whatever their function, the earthworks have also clearly gone out of use before 1944, again suggesting that they may belong to an earlier phase of activity on the peninsular. (S1) (S2) (S3)
