Full Description

A system of First World War practice trenches is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs, centred on TM 24664020 on Levington Heath. The trenches are dispersed over a fairly wide area but there does appear to be a concentration of trenches at TM 24544025, possibly suggesting a more coherent and complex system existed in this area. Most of the trenches appear to follow a roughly 'crenellated' pattern in plan. (S1) (S2) The trenches were most likely constructed for practice purposes and the unfarmed heath would have provided an ideal location to construct these types of earthworks. The trenches are not visible on photographs taken in the 1940s suggesting that they must be of an earlier date and their crenellated form suggests that they may have been dug during the First World War. See LVT 011 for the possible Post Medieval field system and LVT 011 for the undated features. These features appear to extend further to the north but the A14 has been taken to be the limit of the project area. (S3)
