Full Description
A Medieval or early Post Medieval road or trackway is visible as an earthwork bank on aerial photographs from the 1940s, centred on circa TM43305175 (S1, S2). The visible bank appears to be approximately 7 to 8m wide and just under 400m in length, and is bounded by drainage channels that may be later Post-medieval or modern in date. It is seperated from a probable relict sea bank bank, recorded as SUE 081, by a drainage channel at at its eastern end at circa TM43455172, and becomes less visible as it heads inland and joins a trackway that is marked on the current Ordnance Survey base map at circa TM43155168. The road or trackway s probably of Medieval date, as it is marked ion Nordens map of 1601, and lateron a map of circa 1800. It continues to be depicted on the first and second edition Ordnance Survey maps of circa 1884 and 1904 (S3-6). It is probable that it is in this later Post-medieval period that the drainage system in this area was modernised and that the track was bounded by ditches.
