Full Description
A Heavy Anti-aircraft Artillery battery of World War II date is visible as a series of structures on aerial photographs of Gedgrave parish, centred on circa TM40594895. The battery is composed of four south-east facing gun emplacements, aligned along the straight edge of a reversed 'D' shaped track. Five or six structures are visible within the 'D' of track, probably comprising the command post and possibly magazine. The emplacements are connected by the trackway to a number of structures about 150m to the west. The structures would have provided accommodation for the personnel manning the battery. A small number of slit trenches are also visible to the west of the site. The straight arrangement of the gun emplacements suggests that the site may have been built as a DIVER battery, to combat the V1 flying bomb. The battery is not visible on aerial photographs of May 1944 and, and along with two other nearby batteries appears to be part of a late phase of battery construction on the Suffolk Coast (see GED 026, GED 027). It can first be seen on photographs of September 1945. (S1, S2)
