Full Description

A possible military camp is visible on aerial photographs of 1945 as a number of possible structures and earthworks, centred roughly on TM38224663 in Boyton parish (S1). The features are visible about 240m to the north-west of Boyton Hall farm, in a field on the eastern side of a track that leads onto Mill Lane to the north. A possible rectangular tent is visible, circa 10 x 6m in size and about 2m to the south is an irregularly shaped feature about 7m diameter. It is unclear whether this is a structure or an earthwork. A thin bank is also visible about 12m to the north east of the tent. A number of similar sites are visible in the immediate area (see BOY 039). It is unclear from the photographs what function the structure or it's associated features performed, but they may be related to the military training sites or coastal anti-invasion defences that are visible in this area (e.g. see BOY 024, 035, 045). Alternatively, the features may simply be hay ricks, but at this time and in this area the possibility of disguised military features cannot be discounted.
