Full Description

A World War II strongpoint is visible on aerial photographs of the early 1940s onwards as structures built on the saltmarsh of the River Ore in Hollesley parish, centred on circa TM38554553. The strongpoint consists of a hexagonal pillbox and slit trench on the shingle, located just above the mean high water mark, surrounded by circa 240m of barbed wire forming an enclosure of circa 0.4ha. A second structure may be visible on unclear photographs of 1940, but if so, it has been removed by 1941. The strongpoint is one of a number of coastal anti-invasion defences sites in this area. A number of these were constructed before August 1940 (see HLY 078, HLY 080), with most of the remaining hardened defences being erected by October 1941 (see HLY 076-7). The strongpint also appears to be connected with a possible minefield obstruction across the Ore in this area (see HLY 081). The pillbox is still visible on aerial photographs of the 1970s, and is marked on the current OS base map. (S1-4)
