Full Description
A banked enclosure of unknown date and function is visible as a series of earthworks on aerial photographs, centred on TM 16074147 to the south of Bourne Hall in Wherstead parish. The site consists of a number of earthwork banks that enclose a rectangular area roughly 42m by 28m. The site is at the foot of Bourne Hill and the southern side of the enclosure may be formed by a terrace cut into the slope rather than a bank. The southern and eastern banks that form the enclosure extend beyond the main enclosure, suggesting that the earthworks could be part of a larger system. (S1) (S2) (S3) The earthworks may relate to the adjacent brick yard (see WHR 043) or could perhaps be the remains of gardens associated with Bourne Hall. (S4)
