Full Description

An earthwork mound is visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards, centred on circa TM10203263, Brantham parish, located approximately 30m to the north of the railway viaduct on the island in the River Stour to the south of Cattawade (S1, S2). The mound is approximately 26m in diameter and on the 1940s photography appears to be slightly lower in height than the surrounding sea walls. The mound may also be surrounded by a shallow ditch but the ground cover makes this unclear on the majority of available prints (S3). It is not marked on either the first or second edition Ordnance Survey maps of circa 1884 and 1904 which my suggest that it is earlier than Post-Medieval in date (S4, S5). Two smaller mounds of circa 10 and 7m are visible about 560m to the north-west at circa TM097330, but as these are just over the border into Essex they have not been mapped.
