Full Description
A roughly circular enclosure of unknown date and function is visible on aerial photographs defined by an earthwork bank on Woodsend marshes, Southwold parish, centred on circa TM49687595. The diameter of the enclosure is circa 40m and the encircling bank is on average about 3m wide. A bank is not visible on the south east section of the feature but it is not apparent from the photographs whether this is due to deliberate destruction, erosion or whether the feature is incomplete. A possible circular pit about 15m wide can be seen within the area of the enclosure but its purpose is also unclear. The function of the enclosure is not clear but it may be an early reclamation attempt for the purposes of a stock fold, perhaps dating from the medieval period. (S1, S2). Also see SWD 043 & 044.
Earthwork bank is clearly visible on LIDAR
